Although the United States has never had a female president, the country still has a few powerful women leaders. A few of them are powerful in politics. Other American women leaders are strong in the law world. Still others make their voice heard as women’s rights activists. Here is a list of the most famous women leaders in the United States of America.
Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton is arguably one of the most fascinating female leaders in the United States. Hillary Clinton has worn many different political and law hats during her career. She started her professional career as a lawyer and women’s activist. Later her husband became President Bill Clinton and she became a first lady. After her time as a first lady, Clinton became a senator of New York and later was the secretary of state for President Obama.
This last election, Hillary Clinton became the very first woman presidential candidate in the United States. She used the message ‘Stronger Together’ as her campaign slogan. She lost to Donald Trump. The election was bruising, but Hillary Clinton continued onwards anyway with a few speeches. She has recently announced she is working on a new book and will speak at her alma mater Wellesley College and at an International Women’s Day event in March.
Geraldine Ferraro
Geraldine Ferraro made history as the first woman to run as a vice president for a major party in the United States. Her first job was as a seamstress in the Bronx. She went to college to earn a degree to teach as a public school teacher. While teaching she additionally took night classes to earn a degree in law. She became a district attorney who fought against injustice with the law.
In 1978 she became a member of the House of Representatives for the ninth District of New York. Her stances were to protect the working class, because as someone from the working class she understood their struggles. She also was tough on crime and made that a focus of her work as a representative.
Her run as vice president was with the Democrat candidate Walter Mondale from Minnesota. They were an odd running pair. Walter Mondale was the former vice president of President Carter and was from Minnesota and she was a tough talking New York Catholic lawyer. They lost to President Reagan, but Geraldine Ferraro still made her mark on American history.
Nancy Pelosi
Nancy Pelosi is the first woman to become the speaker of the Democrat house. She is also the first female senior Democrat leader in the House of Representatives. Her father and brother are also involved in politics. Her father served in congress and was mayor of Baltimore. Her brother served as mayor in Baltimore as well.
Nancy Pelosi went to college at Trinity College. She met Paul Pelosi there who she would marry. The Pelosi couple moved to San Francisco and had five children.
Nancy slowly eased into politics she started off as a volunteer for the Democratic party organization in her area. In 1987 Nancy Pelosi won a seat in the House of Representatives for California’s Eighth district. Pelosi’s focuses are on human rights, environment issues, health care, and housing initiatives.
