Ministers of Education

The Council’s Presidential Series on Girls Education is a prelude to convening

many of the world’s female government Ministers of Education to form a network

in early 2008. That meeting of Ministers, which will also include experts in the

field of inclusive security for school-age girls, will bring together women leaders

from both developed and underserved areas globally. The network will be formed

with the focus being our Girls Education Initiative.

There are approximately 58 million girls in the developing world who are not enrolled

in school. Extensive evidence shows that unschooled girls are more likely to be poor,

marry early, die in childbirth, lose a child to sickness, have multiple, closely-spaced births,

and have children that are malnourished. Given that these events are likely to impose a

significant cost on society as a whole, providing girls with equal access to and equitable

opportunities within education proves to be a powerful investment for developing nations.

With specific respect to the HIV/AIDS crisis, education has been called the social vaccine

for the disease.
