Text Box: Vigdís Finnbogadóttir (b. 1930) became the first woman in the world to be elected a constitutional Head of State when she became the fourth President of Iceland in 1980.  “President Vigdís,” addressed on a first-name basis according to Icelandic tradition, she was re-elected in 1984 without opposing candidates and in 1988 she won the presidency for a third term, with 92 percent of the vote facing a female candidate. President Vigdís was returned to office unopposed for her fourth term, in 1992. She left office in August 1996, after making the decision not to run again. During her time in office, Finnbogadóttir championed the cultivation of a national identity, focusing on the language, culture, and youth of Iceland.
